Our Programs

Ten thematic areas, one mission

Every program we run is built around the same belief: rural women and girls should shape the decisions that affect their lives.

What we do

Every program starts with listening

IWEO works across ten thematic areas that overlap and reinforce one another — from preventing gender-based violence to building peace between communities. Each one is designed with community voices at the centre, and each one is run with the same evidence-based approach we have used since 2017.

Program 01

GBV / SGBV

Preventing and responding to gender-based violence through community dialogue and survivor support.

Gender-based violence is one of the most persistent barriers to women's safety and participation in Eastern Equatoria. Our GBV program works at two levels: preventing violence before it happens through community dialogue and changing norms, and responding when it does through survivor support, referrals and psychosocial care. We engage men, boys, traditional leaders and religious institutions as allies — because lasting change requires everyone at the table.

Objectives

  • 1Reduce the incidence of gender-based violence across target communities
  • 2Provide safe, confidential support for survivors of violence
  • 3Engage men and boys as active partners in prevention
  • 4Strengthen community referral pathways for health, legal and psychosocial support

How we deliver it

Community dialogue sessions

Facilitated conversations that surface harmful norms and build shared commitment to change.

Survivor support groups

Confidential peer circles providing emotional support, information and referral.

Radio outreach

Awareness programming on Radio Sigata 89 FM and other local stations.

Referral pathways

Coordinated pathways to health, legal and psychosocial services for survivors.

Program 02

Food Security and Livelihood

Supporting rural farmers with productive skills, cooperatives and value chain development.

Agriculture is the backbone of Eastern Equatoria's economy, but smallholder farmers — especially women — face barriers at every step: limited access to inputs, weak markets, and no safety net when harvests fail. Our food security program strengthens the full value chain: from better farming practices, to cooperatives that share resources, to processing and market access. We focus on crops like cassava and groundnuts where women are already the primary producers.

Objectives

  • 1Strengthen smallholder farmers' cooperatives
  • 2Improve household food security and resilience
  • 3Build value chains for cassava, groundnut and other staples
  • 4Increase women farmers' access to markets and finance

How we deliver it

Farmer field schools

Hands-on training in improved techniques, seed selection and post-harvest handling.

Cooperative development

Supporting women-led cooperatives with governance, finance and market links.

Village saving groups

Community-managed savings and loan schemes providing emergency and investment capital.

Value chain support

Processing, packaging and market access for cassava and groundnut products.

Program 03

Women Empowerment

Building women's participation in decision-making, peace processes and income generation.

Women in Eastern Equatoria are the backbone of their communities — yet they remain underrepresented in the rooms where decisions are made. Our women's empowerment program builds the skills, confidence and networks women need to lead: from leadership training, to income-generating activities, to supporting women's participation in community governance and peace processes.

Objectives

  • 1Increase women's participation in community decision-making
  • 2Support women-led income-generating activities
  • 3Build leadership skills among young women
  • 4Strengthen networks of women leaders across communities

How we deliver it

Leadership training

Skills-building sessions on public speaking, negotiation, and community organizing.

Income generation

Seed grants, business skills, and market access for women-led enterprises.

Women's networks

Peer groups and mentoring connecting women leaders across communities.

Program 04

Education

Championing girl child education and removing the barriers that push girls out of school.

Girls in South Sudan are more likely to drop out of school than boys — and the reasons are rarely academic. Early and forced marriage, girl child compensation, household duties, and long distances to school all push girls out of the classroom. Our education program tackles these barriers directly: working with families, schools and communities to keep girls in school and to make sure the education they receive is safe, relevant and worth continuing.

Objectives

  • 1Keep girls in school through community support
  • 2Reduce early and forced marriage through dialogue
  • 3Improve school infrastructure and safety
  • 4Support girls with school materials and fees

How we deliver it

Family dialogue

Home visits and community conversations about the value of girls' education.

School materials

Books, uniforms, and supplies for girls at risk of dropping out.

Safe schools

Training for teachers and staff on protection and inclusion.

Dropout research

Surveys documenting barriers and outcomes to guide our interventions.

Program 05

Health

Improving access to basic health information and services, especially for women and children.

Access to basic health services in rural Eastern Equatoria is limited — often requiring long journeys, and often out of reach for women and children in particular. Our health program focuses on the gaps we can close from the community side: improving health literacy, strengthening referral pathways to existing services, and raising awareness on maternal and child health.

Objectives

  • 1Improve community health literacy
  • 2Increase uptake of maternal and child health services
  • 3Strengthen referral pathways to health facilities
  • 4Raise awareness on disease prevention and nutrition

How we deliver it

Community health dialogues

Awareness sessions on maternal care, nutrition and prevention.

Facility referrals

Coordinated referrals linking communities to nearby health services.

Maternal health support

Information and support for pregnant women and new mothers.

Program 06

HIV / AIDS and Reproductive Health

Raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and improving reproductive health knowledge for women and youth.

HIV/AIDS and reproductive health remain deeply stigmatized topics in many of our communities — which means young people grow up without the information they need, and women face risks they cannot address. Our program creates safe spaces to talk openly about HIV, reproductive health, and consent, and links community members to testing, treatment and support services.

Objectives

  • 1Reduce HIV-related stigma through community dialogue
  • 2Improve reproductive health knowledge among youth
  • 3Link community members to testing and treatment
  • 4Support young mothers and women living with HIV

How we deliver it

Awareness sessions

Safe, facilitated conversations about HIV and reproductive health.

Radio programming

Mass media content on HIV prevention, testing and treatment.

Testing referrals

Pathways to nearby testing, treatment and support services.

Program 07

Water and Sanitation

Educating communities on water use, hygiene and sanitation to protect health and dignity.

Clean water and safe sanitation are foundational to health, education and dignity — but many rural communities still lack reliable access to both. Our WASH program focuses on what we can achieve from the community side: hygiene education, safe water practices, and sanitation promotion that reduces disease and improves quality of life, especially for women and girls.

Objectives

  • 1Improve hygiene practices in target communities
  • 2Promote safe water handling and storage
  • 3Encourage household and community sanitation improvements
  • 4Protect women's and girls' dignity around water access

How we deliver it

Hygiene education

Community sessions on handwashing, safe storage, and disease prevention.

Sanitation promotion

Household-level education on latrine use, maintenance and dignity.

WASH committees

Community groups that maintain shared water points and spread hygiene messaging.

Program 08

Peace Building and Conflict Mitigation

Bringing conflicting communities together through dialogue, reconciliation and women's leadership.

Intercommunal conflict has deep roots in South Sudan, and women carry a disproportionate burden of its consequences. Yet women are often excluded from the conversations that could end it. Our peacebuilding program brings conflicting communities together through structured dialogue, supports women's participation in peace processes, and builds the community-level trust that is the foundation of lasting peace.

Objectives

  • 1Facilitate dialogue between conflicting communities
  • 2Increase women's participation in peace processes
  • 3Support community-level reconciliation
  • 4Build early-warning and conflict-prevention capacity

How we deliver it

Peace dialogues

Facilitated conversations between communities in conflict, such as the Tirangore dialogue.

Women in peace training

Leadership and mediation training for women active in peacebuilding.

Reconciliation support

Follow-through and community engagement after formal dialogues.

Program 09

Advocacy on UNSCR 1325

Advocating for women's participation in peace and security decisions, as called for in UN Security Council Resolution 1325.

UN Security Council Resolution 1325 recognizes that women must be full participants in peace and security — not just victims of conflict. Our advocacy work translates that principle into local action: pushing for women's seats at peace tables, training women to be effective advocates, and holding institutions accountable to their commitments under the resolution.

Objectives

  • 1Increase women's representation in peace and security decisions
  • 2Build awareness of UNSCR 1325 among communities and leaders
  • 3Advocate for policies that reflect the resolution's commitments
  • 4Support women's coalitions working on peace and security

How we deliver it

Policy advocacy

Engagement with state and county officials on women's participation.

Advocacy training

Skills training for women advocates on UNSCR 1325 and how to use it.

Public awareness

Radio and community outreach on what 1325 means and why it matters.

Program 10

Human Rights

Counselling and supporting victims of human rights violations, and promoting civic education.

Human rights violations — from arbitrary detention to denial of basic services — often go unaddressed in rural South Sudan, where people lack information about their rights and access to the mechanisms that protect them. Our human rights program combines direct support for victims with civic education that helps communities understand and claim their rights.

Objectives

  • 1Provide counselling and support for victims of rights violations
  • 2Build community understanding of basic rights
  • 3Promote civic education and participation
  • 4Link victims to legal and psychosocial services

How we deliver it

Victim support

Confidential counselling and case support for victims of rights violations.

Civic education

Community sessions on rights, responsibilities and peaceful participation.

Legal referrals

Connecting victims to legal services and other forms of protection.
